Every construction site is unique and so are the hazards involved. For example, working on scaffolding presents a different set of hazards as compared with a road project that doesn’t involve activities of working at height. So, it is an important aspect for the health and safety experts to identify hazards and minimize the risks with use of safety tools and gadgets.
By employing efficient work safety habits, avoiding dangers, and hazards, a project manager can enhance the productivity of their team. With such, it will be easier to hand over deliverables well before the deadlines and earn a good reputation as a company.
Here are some safety tools that can make your construction more productive and safer,
Construction industry workers are exposed to toxic and corrosive materials in the workplace. That’s why it is important to ensure quick first aid at the workplace. The availability of a first aid kit ensures your employee’s health and safety. There are higher chances of workplace related injury in a construction site than a regular office. First aid kits help with cleaning minor cuts, scrapes, scratches, treating minor burns, applying bandages, applying non-prescription medicines, as well as drinking certain fluids to relieve heat stress. A typical first aid kit includes gloves, bandages, medical tape, tweezers, gauze pads, rolls, medical scissors, and adhesive bandages.
Construction workers need to use their hands for a wide range of on-site activities including picking heavy objects and pulling sharp objects. Safety gloves not only protect the fingers and hands from different types of injuries but also enhance the grip and comfort ability for workers.
High quality safety gloves protect hands and fingers from cuts, abrasion to chemical exposure and electrical shock. Gloves come in a variety of material kinds that offer good protection against a variety of dangers. These gloves are also crucial while working along concrete chemicals and admixtures. It helps protect skin absorption of harmful substances, chemical and thermal burns. The most common type of gloves for general projects where high-level protection isn’t needed are cotton gloves or fabric gloves.
Coveralls are exceptional protective equipment used in construction sites. They not only keep workers safe from hazards but also protect from harmful chemicals or splashes. They are made with strong protective fabric that is high-visibility to improve the way how well other people see each other. It also helps to keep dirt and grime off the clothes. Keeping in mind the type of project, there are six different types of coveralls. They include basic or standard, fire-resistant, waterproof, one-time use, high-visibility, and electric resistance ones. Each of the types has its own purpose, so it is best to know the job requirements before picking one.
Dust masks or FFRs are negative pressure air purifying respirators that are quite effective in preventing inhalation of dust in the air and protecting lungs. The dust mask captures the dust when you pull air while inhaling. The dust mask has to be of suitable sizes to fit your face property. Normal dust masks don’t filter out chemical vapors. Nevertheless, the efficiency of dust filter material varies.
There are three different cartridges available in the market with efficiency levels, those of 95%, 99%, and 99.97%. The efficiency is normally represented as N95 that means the filter is 95% efficient. Whether you’re engaged in general woodworking or are simply involved in general construction, dust masks are a must to have as protective equipment.
Construction sites are too noisy and loud noises on job sites can damage hearing. Hazardous noises at work can cause hearing difficulty especially for equipment producing noise of 85 dBA level. That’s where the use of Earmuffs or ear guards is crucial. They are a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) that not only protect the wearer’s ear from excessive noise pollution but also protect ears from dust or temperature variations.
They are typically made with thermoplastics and sponges in the shape of cups. Ideally, the ear plugs and earmuffs have to be custom-made to fit the worker’s ear. So, if you’re involved in working around heavy equipment or are exposed to demolition work; it is important to protect oneself from hearing damage or loss.
It is very clear that Personal Protective Equipment or Safety Equipment is an important requirement in construction projects. Construction projects lead all other trades in workspace related injuries and fatalities. If you are in the construction industry, you may agree with us that common injuries in your workplace include that to the lungs, head, eyes, ears and skin. Overall, whether you’re involved in construction projects or are undertaking renovation work or maybe a DIY project at home; it is important to use high quality safety equipment to enhance your efficiency and avoid any possible damaging situation to yourself or your team.
Review our Safety Products for more information.]]>Popular flooring options include vinyl, laminate, tile, and hardwood. So, if you’re looking to take plunge of the installation; here’s a detailed guide on each type of floor:
Vinyl flooring is a budget-friendly flooring option available on the market today. Homeowners prefer vinyl flooring due to durability, appearance, and ease of installation. Among other types, luxury vinyl flooring is extremely durable and can resist hardwearing. It is 100% waterproof and is even ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Thanks to its versatility and extreme durability, it doesn’t require much maintenance. You just need to do some cleaning and that’s all.
Installing vinyl plank flooring is a good DIY project and that’s really worth the effort. You can lay vinyl planks over concrete, wood, or even existing vinyl. Here’s what you need,
For installation, start by removing the baseboards and removing the paint sealing with a utility knife. You can gently use the pry bar to lose the baseboard. Try to use a wooden wedge as a support.
Now, you have to plan your floor, marking the center of each wall and snap lines in between using a chalk line. From the center mark, measure the distance to the starting wall using tape measure. Make sure to provide a 5/16 inch expansion gap. Mark the distance on both ends of the wall to get a straight line mark from the wall.
Now, using a utility knife, cut and score the tongue off the first row of vinyl planks. Lay the plank with a cut end towards the wall. For the second row, you need to cut the piece so that the joints of vinyl flooring are staggered at least 6 inches. Now, you can insert the tongue of the first piece into the groove of the previous row’s first plank and rotate down to click together. For the second row, make sure you place the short piece first and then the long end. Continue the process with staggering joints until you’re done. During installation, you can mix planks from different boxes you have purchased to make it look more textured, remember to blend well for a uniform appearance.
Laminate flooring is a highly durable flooring option with realistic designs. It is basically a multi-layer synthetic flooring option that is processed with paper impregnated with melamine. They’re easy to clean and are best as an overall hygienic solution. The installation is easier and cheaper too. So, if you’re looking for an easy flooring option with scratch and water-resistive features; laminate is the way to go.
Just like vinyl, the installation is pretty straightforward and dry. There’s no grout, no mortar, or adhesive involved. The laminate planks can be easily snapped together and layed in place.
For the installation, here’s the equipment you need:
Once you’ve got the laminate floor, you can put some planks together to test the flooring layout. If your room is small, you can even just place the flooring without the need of measurement. But while testing, make sure not to lock the planks at this stage.
Once the layout is final, you can start by installing the underlayment. The vapor barrier is a highly recommended part. This is a thin dense foam layer that not only absorbs sound, but also protects your floor. Just roll the sheets you got and secure the seam with tape.
Now trim off the tongue from the board using a sharp utility knife or circular saw and place it adjacent to the wall. You can start by lying along the longest wall. Make sure to use scrap wood as spacers to get ¼ to 3/8th of an inch gap between the plank and the wall. Now, as per the layout decided, proceed with adding full-length planks to work towards the other part of the room. Make sure to lock each piece with the help of a hammer and a tapping block to have tight end joints. Once you're at the other end of the wall, the last plank on the row will need a little bit of cutting. To do this, measure the length needed (along with the expansion gap) and cut the plank with the help of a circular saw or jigsaw. Secure the cut piece at the end using tongue-and-groove end joint. Now, you can plan and install the other rows in a similar process and finish the installation.
Ceramic tile flooring offers a harder, but still attractive look in your home. There are anti-static tiles available that are dense and easier to clean. They are durable and environmentally friendly. Most homeowners prefer tile flooring due to the ease of care, long-lasting, and durable results.
For tile installation, the planning for patterns plays a crucial role. The overall tile pattern has to be simple, easy to install, and looks good overall for the room or space. Geometric patterns are trendy but cutting on a diagonal style will make things complicated. Anyhow, it’s entirely your own personal preference.
Here’re some tools you need for installation:
For a long-lasting flooring solution, you need to prepare the substrate as firm and inflexible as possible, free of gaps or ridges. You can install cement board panels and screw them to the subfloor.
Once the substrate is fully prepared, you’re ready to measure walls and plan for a pattern. Mark the center point of each wall and snap a chalk line to get a guideline grid. The best way to plan a pattern is by dry fitting the tile without grout or mortar. Now, arrange the tiles along the line such that there's a minimum amount of cut tiles along the wall. Once you’re done with the planning, carefully mark or note the position of tiles.
Now, spread the mortar with a margin trowel as a thin layer. Make sure the size of the mortar extends beyond the perimeter of the tile. Next, press the mortar firmly against the cement board. Press the tile gently on the wet thinset. Twisting the tile back and forth will help to get a deeper and firmer bond. The purpose of doing such is to avoid ridges or gaps in the mortar. Once the tile is in place, position tile spacers at the corners and maintain consistent spacing. Don’t forget to leave 1/4th of an inch along walls and cabinets to counter expansion. Depending on the edge space, you have to cut the tile and snap them apart to fit against the wall and corners.
The next step is to grout the tile seams. To do so, remove the tile spacers and insert the grout using a rubber float. Make sure to firmly draw the long edge of the float across the time seam.
Hardwood flooring is a high-end flooring type with obvious benefits of lovely aesthetics mainly, and durability. It is widely loved by homeowners for the beauty and warmth that it adds to your space. You can get diversified design schemes from traditional to modern. The floor is much easier to clean and has a reputation of being very long lasting.
Here’s a list of tools you need for installing hardwood floor:
Once you've got the flooring, mix the boards from each box to get a nice blend of color. Now is the time to prepare your subfloor. You should remove old flooring and any residue like carpet strips or baseboard.
While installing boards, take note that the first and last rows of the room will be nailed through the face of the board while the rest will be nailed through the tongue. You can screw these rows to prevent splitting. Afterwards, lay the first board along with the groove facing towards the wall. Using 3/4th of an inch spacer, leave the expansion gap along the length towards the end. Now, drive the nails through the predrilled holes. Tap the next board in place with a mallet and tapping block. When you reach the other end of the wall, make sure to cut the size, leaving a gape of 3/4th of an inch to account for expansion.
You see, now you have a number of flooring options with a plethora of benefits. The installation is also simple and straightforward when you have the right type of tools and gadgets. Different types of flooring installation needs a different set of tools. It is important that you make sure to order the right supplies.
Here at SPF Construction Products, we have a range of tools and gadgetry dedicated for all sorts of flooring ventures. Visit spf.net.au and get 10% off your first order. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t maintain your roof at all. Delaying roof maintenance and replacement can result in bigger and costlier problems down the road. Therefore, you must watch for the warning signs.
Though you can make the most out of a roof with proactive maintenance, but still a time will come when reroofing is indispensable. So, you must know the trouble signs in order to timely allocate a budget for a reroofing. Signs such as loose shingles, missing or damaged shingles, missing gutter holes, and damaged flashing are great indicators that your roof needs to be replaced.
Timely replacing a roof isn't just about making a house more livable and safer; it’s also about preventing thousands of dollars in damage to your home and personal health.
Here are some tell-tale signs that your roof is in trouble and needs replacement before it's too late.
Elements like hail and heavy rain can cause massive damage to your roof by exposing it to high levels of water, especially in older homes. If you see broken or missing shingles, missing gutters, or holes in the shingles, this is a sign that your roof is in trouble. Newly constructed homes rarely experience storm damage, but older homes are prime candidates for extensive roof rot. Visible leaks are another sign that your roof needs to be repaired.
It is without a doubt that a saggy or droopy roof surely needs replacing. That’s a sign you should panic about because you don’t have much you left. So, check for the sagging spots on your roof from the top or any structural issue. A sagging roof may be due to a problem with the decking or the supports in the foundation. If you can find a depression or droop in your roof, call in the experts and don’t waste any second.
If you live in a place where it snows, pay attention to this: When snow or ice chunks gather on your roof, it can often cause a sheet of ice to form on the roof. Overtime, the sheet of ice can become a kind of ice dam, which causes the water to freeze and create a huge water leak. Ice dams are and annoyance for you as a homeowner. They can damage the roof, gutters, and your home. In extreme situations, ice dams can exert enormous load and there’s a risk of roof collapse. The snow around your attic will eventually melt but again it flows down at the eaves where it freezes and causes cracking in your roof. It can also damage your gutter and shingles.
If you have a roof with age over 25 years, you should get ready to replace your roofing. Even if you don’t find any damage from the outside, the roof may have underlying issues that you can’t ignore. In the same fashion, if you notice the decking or rafter of your roof is sagging downward instead of remaining straight, you have no other option but to let go of the roof.
As mentioned earlier, any signs of damage to the roof itself, such as holes or discoloration, can help you determine whether your home needs to be replaced. Signs such as holes or cracks may also indicate other issues, including leaks, which can also indicate roofing material failure. If you see signs of leakage coming from the roof, consult with a professional roofer to determine whether or not your roof needs to be replaced.
Your roof is up there to protect from the glaring of the sunlight and avoid rain tipping down from the attic. So, if you can see sunlight from your attic or water stains down there, call a pro. You can patch a small area or few leaks, but larger damaged areas need roof replacement sooner.
Moss or algae on your roof spells trouble. Mold, fungi, and moss indicate trapped moisture in your roof that can ruin your rooftop. So, try to inspect the roof for trapped moisture or rotting, especially at the lowest points. The growth of moss can accelerate in cool and moist climates. Moss or algae can be a cosmetic issue, but it can accelerate the wearing of the roof. Call in an expert, and they’ll take care of the mold with power washing or scraping. If the problem is persistent, you can decide to replace your roof or use algae-resistant roofs.
A heavy windstorm can crack shingles here and there. Plus, they gradually lose volatiles due to evaporation and aging. The shingle dries and cracks over time. Heat can accelerate this craze-cracking or random cracking. You can replace these shingles with new pieces. But if the cracking and tearing are widespread, better to opt to have a roof replacement.
Check for the bald spots where granules are missing. You can replace a few shingles here and there, but they’ll never match the color of the old ones. The color of shingles has changed over the years, and the color of the roof also fades over time. If you are annoyed by this replacing venture, you can opt to replace the whole thing.
You see, a lot of issues with roofs can be timely addressed. If you’re having a leaky roof, here at SPF we have high-quality products to make it waterproof. For instance, you can use Aquaflex Roof a ready-to-use flexible liquid membrane to apply waterproof layer on exposed surface or roofing. Besides, we’ve got range of roof and gutter silicon sealant to make your roof leak-proof. If your roof has issues with insulation and you’re finding cavities, you can get fix it with foam to fill all openings in roof constructions thereby enhancing sound and thermal insulation.
Your roof offers warning signs before failing. Timely replacing a roof ensures safety of your home and your family. If you’re engaged every weekend treating leaks in your roof, it’s a time to let it go. There’s no point living with damaged roofing, mold growing behind plaster walls, missing roof shingles, and dripping waters.
Being a proactive homeowner, you can plan for a roof replacement venture without much trouble. You can keep track of the tell-tale signs as that would mean a roof replacement in the coming 2 to 3 years. That gives you enough time to allocate budget, finalize a roofing material, and hire a professional roofing contractor for the replacement.

Estimation and Quantity surveying is one of a very vital, imperative and significant phase of any construction and civil engineering project whether it is of construction of dam or a house or a road or a plaza or any other type.
The client is in real relying on the results you are preparing after estimation of some job. Keeping in mind the estimate you would be preparing, the client may give go-a-head to his team or not depending on the funding and financial backings.
Not any one can be a good estimator; it actually needs your artistic, engineered and technical aptitude which need years to develop through experience, judgment and observations. So if you are planning to be the lucky one than this post is a real food for your thoughts.
Like all other technologies and branches of civil engineering; estimation and quantity surveying also have some rules and principles, understanding of which is foremost and utmost need. In preparing an estimate, the Estimator must have good knowledge regarding the most important rules of quantity surveying.
Like it is rightly said that drawing is the language of engineering; you can explain a construction project through drawings in very small time and in an easy way otherwise you may need to write books to explain the same.
Therefore understanding and visualizing the drawings, sections and plans is a very important skill which every engineer and estimator must have. In my experience of two years I have also been taught in the field to understand drawing, follow the drawing. Drawing is like a bible for any project.
In our engineering classes, one of our teacher of soil mechanics while explaining the uncertain and unique nature of any project repeatedly warned us to be ready for any happening at site; you must be ready for any sort of unavoidable and inescapable situations.
As every project is unique and different the specifications, conditions, provisions and requirements are different which you must know prior doing estimation work. You must know the type and characteristics of the material to be used as each material type has its own rate.
In drawing classes you might have cut sections from various plans; during this process your visualization ability is tested. This is one of the most important ability, not only for a good estimator, but for all the ones in the construction industry whether you are a planning engineer, site engineer or even a designer.
So being an estimator you must have the ability to visualize all the steps during the process of construction.
Before preparing the estimate, the estimator should visit the site and make a study of conditions, there. For example, if the construction of a large building is planned, the estimator or his representative should visit the site and:
The qualities of a good estimator can be summarized as :
1 = A knowledge of the details of construction work.
2 = Experience in construction work.
3 = Having information regarding the materials required, machinery needed, overhead problems, and costs of all kinds.
4 = Good judgment with regard to different localities, different jobs and different workmen,
5 = Selection of a good method for preparing an estimate
6 = Ability to be careful, through, hard working and accurate.
7 = Ability to collect, classify and evaluate data relating to estimation.
8 = Ability to visualize all the steps during the process of construction.
So, once you’re done with accurate estimate, you’re ready to order supplies for your project. An estimator must also know resources where one can order construction project supplies without much hassle and in the best cost possible. As the shopping trends are changing across the globe, so is in the construction industry. Project owners and managers are relying on online stores in a way to control costs and bid intelligently.
